clearance rule in altium
«

have three questions regarding the design rules in Altium 7.0.
1) Can anyone provide me with a good explanation about Room Definition. Even after reading the wiki about it, I am still a little confused.
2) I will be placing surface mount components on both sides of my board. How do I set up my clearances to accomodate this?
- Right now I have created two clearance rules; top and bottom, and turned the default off. The top is set 10mil from the top layer or multilayer. The bottom is setup of similar. Am I missing anything with approach?
3) I have turned off the default clearance error, but I still show clearance violations whenever I move the components (after running 'Reset Error Markers'.)
Thanks for the help

Hi Jonathan,
1. Room Definition, basically, when you create one new schematic, it will create one new room in PCB for that schematic.
Main purpose of this room is to group the components from that particular schematic to be inside one area.
You can manage the component placement with this room definition (i.e auto placement of components)
you can create exception rule use room definition also.
Room definition is a usefull feature when you are designing Multi-channel design.
2. If you want to place the component on both side, top and bottom layer. you can just use default rule.
but if you need to set the different clearance value for each layer, you can create new rule and set the query to "(OnLayer(' cccc ))"
* cccc = layer name, i.e top layer / bottom layer
3. You may check your default clearance rule, just ensure that you have one rule apply to all of the objects.
Regards
Budi
